GI-ESCR submits statement to UN Intersessional Meeting for dialogue and cooperation
GI-ESCR has submitted a statement to the UN Intersessional Meeting for dialogue and cooperation on Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which took place on 18 January 2022. The meeting specifically focused on Sustainable Development Goal 5 ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’, SDG 17 ‘Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development’, and the overarching promise of the 2030 Agenda to leave no one behind and to reach those furthest behind first.
In the statement, GI-ESCR highlighted the importance of a just green transition to achieve SDG 5. Renewable energy will be quintessential for such a transition and implementing renewable energy systems is also an opportunity to redefine our energy systems into ones that protect the environment, respect human rights, and advance gender equality. An effective and just green transition will require regional and global partnerships that take into consideration human rights, ensuring that such alliances do not support actions and decisions which neglect the negative human rights impact of green transition projects, but lead the way for sustainable development in line with human rights.
