GI-ESCR organised an HRC51 side event on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Just Transition

GI-ESCR, together with the Permanent Mission of Chile to the UN in Geneva, the Permanent Mission of Finland to the UN in Geneva, and the Delegation of the EU to the UN in Geneva emphasized the importance of the just transition to be guided by a human rights compass and ensure that the current narrative around just transitions acknowledges that the just green transition goes beyond the right to work to include all economic, social, cultural and environmental rights.

The recently published report by GI-ESCR “Setting a Compass for a Feminist Green Transformation: Using Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights as Guiding Tools for a Gender-Just Transition” provides food for thought to spearhead the debate and demonstrate to States, civil society and other stakeholders alike that a holistic approach to the green transition is key to fulfil climate as well as human rights commitments.

This side event thus served as a conversation starter among States, civil society, and other stakeholders to expand the understanding of a just transition and deepen the narrative that a human rights compass must guide and lead efforts towards a gender-just green transition.

It thus convened a group of experts from different areas of expertise and sectors to discuss the just transition, starting from the right to work and expanding the understanding and vision towards an inclusion of all economic, social, cultural and environmental human rights.
