GI-ESCR delivered a joint statement at the General Debate of the CSW66

The Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (GI-ESCR) jointly with International Women’s Rights Action Watch (IWRAW-AP), the Interamerican Association of Environmental Defence (AIDA) and Public Services International (PSI) delivered an oral statement at the General Debate of the 66th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66).

The energy transition provides a unique opportunity to ensure women’s experiences, voices and contributions inform and influence the development of a key sector of our economies. Using the international human rights framework, which provides obligations, analytical tools and key advocacy spaces to drive the energy transition, we call on Member states to shape and develop new international standards on gender equality at the CSW66 that can be used to guide a gender-just energy transition that places women in all their diversity at the centre of decarbonization efforts to achieve a sustainable future for all.

The co-sponsoring organizations furthermore highlight the importance of embedding gender equality and human rights principles in the global transformation towards green energy and provide a key set of policy recommendations to avoid new renewable energy systems replicate the harmful practices often found in the extractive fossil-fuel based energy model.
