Decarbonization and Just Transitions in Latin America

On Wednesday, 20 July GI-ESCR participated in a learning and exchange session on “Decarbonization and Just Transitions in Latin America” organized by Oxfam to detonate and engage in a conversation with activists and experts to explore the opportunities and risks that the energy transition represents for the articulation of rights-based and sustainable development pathways in the region.

Programme Officer on Climate and Environmental Justice, Alejandra Lozano presented the gender dimensions of the energy transition highlighting the importance of addressing the energy transition as a gender and human rights issue and as part of the activities of the regional Working Group on Just Energy Transitions—a collective regional effort that involves more than 23 organizations working on just energy transitions in Latin America. Alejandra was joined by Carlos Mongue, Associate Researcher of DESCO and Consultant of GRADE in Perú and Chelsea Policy Advisor on gender, extractives, and energy policy for the Climate team at Oxfam America.

GI-ESCR participation in this internal discussion amongst Oxfam staff and partners aimed to contribute to bridge the gaps in knowledge on the key elements of a transformative agenda for the decarbonization of the region and to strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders working in this field. These efforts will be key milestones in the development of a common alternative narrative to the current fossil-fuel and extractive energy model driving interlinked inequalities and environmental crises in Latin America, as well as to identify synergies to build on the exchange of lessons learned between different partner organizations.
