On 9 April, a visit by the REDESCA Rapporteur of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights took place at the Mesana Alto in the Valparaíso, Chile. The visit was organized by GI-ESCR and Techo-Chile, who brought together a group of Casa Abierta’s representatives, and Soledad García Muñoz, the REDESCA Rapporteur. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss human rights violations Valparaiso’s informal settlements.  

Casa Abierta brings together a large network of 14 informal settlements in Valparaíso.  One of the main demands of Casa Abierta is to highlight the constant violation of the right to adequate housing and other interrelated rights.  

Citizen demands for access to decent housing and for building just cities have continued to deepen with the social events of recent years. The pandemic has made evident the precarious living and housing conditions that affect thousands of families in Chile. This reality unveil the fragility of the social protection system and redefines the role of housing as a social right that allows us to protect other spheres of our daily life (health, employment, environment and water).
