Webinar #5 'The climate crisis and the constitutional process: towards a sustainable social pact’

On Thursday September 3rd, we held our fifth seminar entitled ‘The climate crisis and the constitutional process: towards a sustainable social pact’. In this particular seminar, the panelists addressed issues of socio-environmental conflicts in the Chilean and Latin American contexts, sustainable economic development, access to water, hazardous areas, citizen participation. They also discussed the opportunities, obstacles, as well as consequences of building an ecological Constitution in Chile.

The constituent process that Chile is going through opens a unique opportunity to think about how the relationship between the environment, citizens, the State and the market could be organized with a view to realizing economic, social, cultural and environmental rights for all.

Soledad García Muño, Special Rapporteur for economic, social, cultural and environmental rights of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, notably said:

"Development models in Latin America must move away from extractive logics and have greater respect for nature and the human rights of present and future generations who are also entitled to a healthy and balanced environment”.

Speakers:

  • Soledad García Muñoz: Special Rapporteur for economic, social, cultural and environmental rights of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
