UN Special Rapporteur reminds states of their obligation to deliver public services

GI-ESCR welcomes Report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to development in an oral statement

In an oral statement presented to the Human Rights Council (HRC) today, GI-ESCR welcomes the report of UN Special Rapporteur on the right to development, Saad Alfarargi, addressing national financing for development.

The report calls on States to strengthen existing public delivery of social services, in line with their obligation to deliver public services. GI-ESCR also echoes the Special Rapporteur’s concern regarding the privatisation and financialisation of social services, based on profits rather than on the universal enjoyment of human rights.

This report, as GI-ESCR highlights, adds to the growing number of human rights experts who have affirmed that the realisation of economic, social and cultural rights requires States to establish quality, transparent, gender-responsive, democratically governed public services.
