The Right to Education in Baltimore: Exploring Innovative Approaches

On 16 October 2019, GI-ESCR joined national and international education advocates and practitioners in Baltimore, USA, to listen, learn and foster dialogue and solidarity on initiatives and actions for strengthening public education systems and practices.

Our engagement was based on the vision that the use of human rights instruments, such as the Abidjan Principles on the Right to Education, should be driven by people, for people. Furthering our understanding and use of these rights and instruments requires bringing people together to learn about the successes and challenges faced by different education systems from the perspective of the learners, practitioners, and communities of each system.

The experience allowed us to gain a better understanding of the situation in a challenging but fascinating context - Baltimore - and the efforts being taken to implement the right to education through a range of innovative means.
