GI-ESCR raises the need to tackle tax havens and tax competition in meeting with new Special Rapporteur on human rights and climate change
This Friday 8th of July Ian Fry, the recently appointed UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and climate change, met civil society organisations from all over the world to discuss the priorities of his mandate and the current most pressing human rights issues. GI-ESCR’s Director of Strategy and Advocacy, Rodrigo Echecopar, participated in the meeting and raised the importance of tackling tax evasion through tax havens to be able to generate the fiscal revenue necessary for fulfilling climate urgencies while respecting human rights.
The new Special Rapporteur confirmed that climate finance, loss and damage and just transitions will be part of his main focus during his tenure. He also recognised the importance of thinking of innovative ways of generating finance and that exposing the abuses of tax havens was an issue that deserved due consideration. Furthermore, he mentioned that this alternative could be included in his upcoming report to the UN General Assembly due in September.
