GI-ESCR’s Magdalena Sepúlveda discusses the impact of COVID-19 in the leading spanish language newspaper El País
Magdalena Sepúlveda, Executive Director of the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights published an OP-ED in the leading spanish language newspaper EL País. In her Op-Ed Sepúlveda stressed that COVID-19 is not gender blind. She noted that this crisis is impacting us all, but not in the same way. “Among the worse losers are women and girls living in poverty and those who were just one crisis away of falling into poverty”, she emphasized. According to Sepúlveda, one of the silver linings of this appalling pandemic has been that it has reminded us all that public services are precious. “Not only do they save lives, but they also keep us healthy and ensure the future of our children. There is now an urgent need to provide States with sufficient resources to rebuild societies and economies that are not only more prosperous and resilient but also more equitable.”
In her article, Sepúlveda provided several recommendations on concrete fiscal policy measures that should be taken to ensure that women and girls do not pay the bill of the pandemic . Read the full Op-ed HERE.
