GI-ESCR shares its work on inequality for a course at the Sant'Anna Institute

On 22 February, GI-ESCR's senior research and Legal Advisor, Sylvain Aubry, presented GI-ESCR's recent research and ongoing work on the analysis and advocacy context to address economic inequality from a human rights perspective. This session was part of the advanced course "Development law, policy and advocacy" co-organised by the Sant’Anna School and Caritas Internationalis.

The presentation was based on research conducted jointly by GI-ESCR and the Sciences Po Human Rights Clinic on the practice of U.N. human rights treaty bodies regarding economic inequalities, and a discussion seminar that the institutions co-organised. The result of the research will be published as a book chapter, in a book on vertical economic inequalities, edited by Gillian MacNaughton and Diane F. Frey, to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2021.

This work on economic inequalities contributes to GI-ESCR's efforts to advance human rights frontiers and use human rights to challenge existing power dynamics and address contemporary issues. It is particularly relevant to the programs on climate change and public services and privatisation, that directly adddress economic inequality issues.

A database of U.N. human rights treaty bodies' statements on vertical economic inequalities and a new page summing up the main findings and implications for the human rights field will be released on our website alongside the publication of the aforementioend book chapter later in the year.

The preliminary findings of the research can be found on this blog post on the Oxford Human Rights Hub.
