GI-ESCR appoints a new Deputy Director: José Antonio Guevara Bermudez

We are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Deputy Director, José Antonio Guevara Bermudez. José Antonio brings to GI-ESCR his vast experience in human rights law from diverse positions. In his 25 years of experience, José has served in leadership positions in governmental, civil society and academic institutions, working at both national and international levels.

José Antonio was previously the Executive Director of the Mexican Commission for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (CMDPDH). Before that he worked at the Mexico City Human Rights Commission and at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, as Minister responsible for human rights. Until recently he was also the Chair of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

José Antonio is a human rights lawyer, with a PhD in Human Rights Law from University Carlos III, Madrid Spain. He will bring strong managerial skills and leadership vision which complement the existing strengths of the organisation.

I am very excited to join the recognized team of professionals of GI-ESCR to promote the respect by States and other relevant international actors of economic, social, cultural and environmental rights, through offering innovative responses to the challenges of our time such as inequality produced by the prevailing economic system, the recent financial crisis caused by the COVID19 pandemic and the war in Europe, and of course the alarming climate and environmental crisis.
