GI-ESCR and the Special Rapporteur on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental of the IACHR met the new Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs

The meeting aimed to congratulate the new government’s commitment on having a human rights-guided foreign affairs policy and discuss areas for collaboration between the Ministry, the Special Rapporteur, GI-ESCR and the broader civil society.

Our Executive Director, Magdalena Sepúlveda, and the Special Rapporteur on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental of the IACHR, Soledad García, arrived to Chile the 6th of April to attend ReimaginaLA, a Latin American civil society conference. In that context, both met Antonia Urrejola, the new Minister of Foreign Relations of the Chilean Government, and Jose Miguel Ahumada, Undersecretary of Economic Foreign Relations.

The meeting was at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offices in central Santiago and the assistants discussed Chile’s commitment to pushing a human-rights and climate-conscious focus in its foreign affairs policy. This included adopting the Escazu Treaty and announcing a bid for the Human Rights Council. Also, the organizations discussed the importance of Resolution 3/21 of the REDESCA and the IACHR, that enshrines the human-rights obligations of Inter-american states under the context of the climate emergency.

All organisations committed to collaborating in future initiatives that address the climate emergency and international fiscal policy from a human rights perspective.
