COVID-19: Inequalities in the Global South

During an online panel event organized by the International Association for Feminist Economics on June 5, GI-ESCR Executive Director Magdalena Sepúlveda talked about how the pandemic and the health crisis is exacerbating patterns of discrimination and increasing gender inequality in Latin America. She also addressed how the pandemic has laid bare the unjust social organization of care and how insufficient measures have been taken to recognize, reduce, and redistribute unpaid care and domestic work in the region. In her presentation, she stated that the response to the pandemic requires moving towards the provision of universal basic income in the region and ensuring gender equality in taxation.

Ashwini Deshpande (Ashoka University); Ípek Ílkkaracan (Istanbul Technical University); and Abena Oduro (University of Ghana) also participated in the event. The discussion was moderated by Naila Kabeer (London School of Economics). The event was followed by over 100 participants from around the globe.
