Celebrating the Abidjan Principles’ Second Anniversary | ANIMATION is out!

Today is the day! On the occasion of our celebratory event marking the 2nd anniversary of the Abidjan Principles on the right to education, we are releasing the last opus of our 5-video series. After four videos with short interviews, The Abidjan Principles: Protecting the right to education together is an animation summing up the main challenges affecting the right to education and explaining why all States should implement the Abidjan Principles as a way to protect and fulfill this fundamental right.

Every person has the right to free education of the highest possible quality. And States have the obligation to provide for this right without discrimination. However, children’s access to quality education is highly unequal and, too often, contingent on their background.

Commercialisation of education has led many governments and investors to shift funds to private education, siphoning away vital funds from public schools. As a result, private schools have developed rapidly, often without the necessary regulation, serving those that can afford it, thus contributing to heighten inequalities and segregation.

To address this situation, the Abidjan Principles on the right to education were adopted in February 2019. They summarise in one place all existing laws and standards that protect our right to education.

Celebrating together!

Today, we are celebrating the 2nd anniversary of the Abidjan Principles, which have become the reference text on the right to education. This celebration event will also enable us to reflect on the role of the Abidjan Principles in the coming months, in a context where education has been severely impacted by the pandemic and containment measures.

Stay tuned!

The Abidjan Principles were adopted in February 2019 by 57 eminent experts from around the world in Côte d’Ivoire, after a three-year consultative process, which hundreds of people from various constituencies contributed to. Since their adoption and worldwide recognition, the Abidjan Principles have given the right to education a central place in global policy debates.

In 2019, the Paris Peace Forum rewarded the Abidjan Principles as one of the ten ‘most promising governance projects’ among 716 projects from 115 countries.
