This year the 66th session on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66) will address as a priority topic achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment in the context of climate, environmental and disaster risk reduction programs, and policies. It will be an important space for States, women’s rights organizations, and social movements to discuss how we can use the international human rights framework to advance a gender-just transition towards a sustainable world.

In this light, the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (GI-ESCR) submitted a statement to the CSW66 highlighting the need to ensure that the energy transitions not only tackle the climate emergency, but also addresses energy poverty and the deeply embedded gender inequalities that continue to be pervasive in the energy industry. The statement therefore puts forward a set of key policy recommendations to embed principles of human rights and gender equality in the global transformation of energy systems.

Participating at the CSW66 allows GI-ESCR to connect with key stakeholders, including civil society organizations working in the climate and women’s rights spaces and foster spaces to break down silos between these two movements. This will be a unique space to collectively advance a common narrative to address the intersecting climate and inequalities crises, as a key strategy to advocate for a gender-equal and sustainable world.
